Eventing : Australian rider Sam Griffiths wins in Badminton

Article

Sam Griffiths won last Sunday the 65th edition of the prestigious CCI 4* of Badminton (England), after a cross-country course tormented by the weather, and a very complicated obstacle course ! The Australian rider and his 11-year-old horse Paulank Brockagh, beat British riders Oliver Townsend on Armada and Harry Meade on Wild Lone.

Eventing : Australian rider Sam Griffiths wins in Badminton

25th after the dressage, Sam Griffiths performed really well during the cross-country race in order to move up the rankings to the 5th spot before the start of the Jumping test. On a rainy and windy afternoon, the cross-country course was a real challenge on Saturday, with a multitude of refusals and falls. This was the case for World No. 1 William Fox Pitt, 7th after dressage, who fell on the 27th fence in front of his home crowd. None of the competitors actually finished the course in the allotted time, and only 32 of the 83 couples initially were able to finish the competition at the end of the Jumping test on Sunday.

After the cross-country course, Australian rider Paul Tapner and Kilronan were in top position. His lead even allowed him to drop 2 bars and to concede time during the Jumping test on Sunday.  But the nerves got the best of him, and four faults finally pushed him off the podium. The course was incredibly difficult, since only one rider - fellow Australian Wendy Schaeffer - managed to finish the course without dropping a bar (but with three points for time exceeded). Sam Griffiths committed one mistake, but it was still enough to take the title home !
